AUDITION

Please read the following information carefully regarding the audition process for NJYAE.
STEP 1: Read the information below

This year’s first set of auditions for NJYAE (Reading Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Small Chamber Groups) have been completed. We are still accepting new students during the 2017-18 season. Please contact us if you are interested in joining one of our ensembles, and we will gladly arrange an individual audition time.

For ensemble descriptions, term dates, rehearsal schedules, and tuition, please click here.

You may indicate your preferred ensemble, but ensemble assignments will only be made after the audition, and your preferred ensemble selection cannot be guaranteed since placement is based upon audition results.

There is a non-refundable audition fee of $45 due at the time of scheduling your audition. Audition fee is waived for individual auditions this fall!

Results of the audition will be emailed approximately 2-3 days after audition. You will then be able to register and complete payment for the ensemble you have been invited to join.

Audition results are valid for the entire school year.

Any audition questions should be addressed to auditions@njyae.org only after reading the audition information and FAQ on this page.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Placement in our ensembles is ability-based rather than age-based.
  • We accept students ages 8-18 for audition.
  • Students must have been playing their audition instrument for a minimum of 2 years and have at minimum basic sightreading skills.
  • At this time, we are exclusively auditioning orchestral string instruments for the Reading and Chamber Orchestras. We welcome the following disciplines (strings, piano, winds, brass, voice) for consideration for Small Chamber Groups.

If you have audition questions, please start by reading our FAQ below. If your question is not answered in the FAQ, please email us at auditions@njyae.org.

FAQ
What ensembles can I audition for in the 2017–2018 season?

For the 2017–2018 season, we will be auditioning string instruments for the Reading Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra and a wider set of disciplines for the Small Chamber Groups.

Do I need to memorize my audition repertoire?

While we would prefer that you memorize your prepared work, it is not required. Scales should be memorized.

Do I need to bring a piano accompanist to my audition?

You may do so, but it is not necessary or required. NJYAE does not provide accompanists.

Do I need to bring a music stand or a chair?

No. We will have music stands and chairs available. Cellists and double bassists may prefer to bring their own stool or chair if desired.

How long will my audition last?

Auditions generally last between 8-10 minutes.

What are the tuition and season schedule for NJYAE?

Please click here and use the link under each ensemble to learn more about the tuition information, ensemble schedule, and level of commitment.

Will there be a place for me to warm up?

Yes. We will have warm-up rooms available directly prior to your audition.

What happens if I miss my audition?

We will not be able to reschedule auditions. Please arrive early for your audition and remember to bring your instrument and music.

Do I need to be a current student of the NJ Academy of Music in order to join NJYAE?

It is not required that you study at NJAOM. We welcome all students who are able to prepare the audition repertoire to audition for participation in NJYAE.

Are NJYAE auditions open to the public?

No. NJYAE holds closed auditions. Only the auditioning student, an accompanist (if desired), audition monitor, and the jury are permitted in the audition room. Parents, friends, and other supporters must wait outside the audition room.

What should I wear to the audition?

Please wear appropriate concert attire (no jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, etc.). Ensure that you can play your instrument comfortably in your attire by practicing in it ahead of the audition.

Will I be guaranteed a spot in an ensemble at NJYAE if I audition?

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee acceptance into one of our ensembles. Ensemble assignments are made only after auditions are held, as a direct result of the auditions. However, if you are not accepted into an ensemble, we encourage you to audition again at a later date.
